The Power of Memory: An Interview with CEO of the Umonics Method Sancy Suraj
In a world where information overload is the norm, memory training has become increasingly important, especially for young children. This is where Sancy Suraj, the CEO of the Umonics Method, comes in. Suraj is a renowned memory athlete and a leading expert in memory training in Singapore. He founded the Umonics Method with the aim of helping preschoolers improve their memory skills through fun and engaging techniques. In addition to the Umonics Method, Suraj also runs Pinnacle Minds and the Knowles Training Institute, both of which specialize in memory training and education.
What inspired you to become a memory athlete and to start The Umonics Method?
My inspiration for becoming a memory athlete and starting The Umonics Method comes from my personal experience and observation of the lack of memory training in our education system. When I was in university, I stumbled upon the world of memory sports and was immediately fascinated by the idea of being able to memorize vast amounts of information in a short amount of time. I was amazed at the techniques used by memory athletes and how they could easily remember numbers, words, and even entire decks of cards.
As I delved deeper into the world of memory sports, I realized that these techniques could be applied to everyday life and that memory training could be a valuable tool for success, both academically and personally. I also noticed that there was a lack of emphasis on memory training in our education system, which I felt was a missed opportunity for students to develop this important skill.
This realization led me to found The Umonics Method, a memory enrichment training program for preschoolers. I wanted to teach young children the techniques used by memory athletes and provide them with a strong foundation in memory training, just like how we teach them to read and write. By doing so, they can develop better memory skills and be better prepared for academic and personal success.
In addition, I founded Pinnacle Minds, a Singapore-based memory improvement training organization, and Knowles Training Institute, World-class training & development solutions, to bring memory training to people of all ages and backgrounds. My goal is to make memory training accessible to everyone and to help them unleash their full potential through the power of memory.
Can you describe some of the memory techniques that you teach preschoolers through The Umonics Method?
At The Umonics Method, we teach preschoolers a wide range of memory techniques that are specifically tailored to their age group. One of the core techniques we teach is the use of mental imagery. This technique involves creating vivid mental images of the information that they want to remember. For example, if a child wants to remember the name of an animal, they might create a mental picture of that animal in their mind. By making the image as detailed and colourful as possible, the child is more likely to remember it.
We also teach preschoolers the technique of association. This technique involves linking new information with existing knowledge that the child already knows. For example, if a child wants to remember the colours of the rainbow, they might associate each colour with a different object, such as a red apple or a yellow sun. By linking new information with familiar concepts, the child is more likely to remember it.
Another technique that we teach is the use of acronyms. This technique involves creating a short phrase or word using the first letter of each item that the child wants to remember. For example, if a child wants to remember the planets in the solar system, they might create the acronym “My Very Eager Mother Just Served Us Nachos” to remember Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. By creating a memorable acronym, the child is more likely to remember the information.
Lastly, we also teach preschoolers the technique of repetition. This technique involves repeating the information that the child wants to remember several times. By doing so, the child is more likely to remember the information. However, we do not rely solely on repetition as a memory technique, as it can become monotonous and ineffective if not combined with other techniques.
What do you think are the most important skills that young children can learn through memory training?
Through memory training, young children can learn several essential skills that will benefit them throughout their lives. One of the most important skills that young children can learn through memory training is the ability to pay attention and focus. Memory training exercises require a child’s full attention, which can help them develop their ability to focus and concentrate on a task for an extended period. This skill is crucial for academic success, as it allows children to learn and retain information more effectively. Additionally, the ability to focus and concentrate can also help children develop strong problem-solving skills, which are crucial for success in all areas of life.
Another essential skill that young children can learn through memory training is the ability to think creatively and critically. Memory techniques often require a child to come up with unique and creative ways to remember information. This process can help children develop their imagination and creative thinking skills, which can benefit them in all areas of life. Moreover, these skills can help children to become better problem solvers and make better decisions as they grow older.
Memory training can also help young children develop their confidence and self-esteem. Learning how to memorize and recall information can give children a sense of accomplishment and pride, which can help them build confidence in their abilities. Furthermore, as children become more proficient in memory techniques, they will become more comfortable and confident in their ability to learn and succeed. This confidence can have a positive impact on their academic performance and can also help them in their personal and professional lives.
“Memory training can be a powerful tool for young children, not just for improving their memory skills, but for developing essential life skills such as focus, creativity, and confidence that will benefit them for years to come.”
What challenges have you faced in promoting the importance of memory training for preschoolers in Singapore?
As with any new concept or idea, promoting the importance of memory training for preschoolers has not been without its challenges. One of the main challenges we have faced is the traditional mindset that education only involves teaching children to read, write, and count. Many parents and educators believe that memory training is not necessary for young children and may even consider it a waste of time. This mindset is a significant obstacle that we have had to overcome in promoting the Umonics Method and its benefits.
Another challenge we have faced is the lack of awareness and understanding of memory training among parents and educators. Many parents are not familiar with the concept of memory training and are hesitant to try something new, especially when it comes to their children’s education. We have had to invest a lot of time and resources in educating parents and educators about the benefits of memory training and how it can help their children succeed academically and in life.
Additionally, there is a perception that memory training is only suitable for gifted or high-achieving children. We strongly believe that memory training is beneficial for all children, regardless of their academic abilities. However, we have had to work hard to dispel this misconception and demonstrate that memory training can help children of all abilities.
Finally, another challenge we have faced is the competition from other educational programs that focus on academic subjects such as math and science. Parents and educators are often more willing to invest in these programs, as they believe that they are more directly linked to academic success. However, we have continued to highlight the importance of memory training and its role in building a strong foundation for lifelong learning.
Despite these challenges, we have been able to successfully promote the Umonics Method and the importance of memory training for preschoolers in Singapore. We have seen positive results in our students and have received feedback from parents and educators about the benefits of our program. We will continue to work hard to overcome any challenges and promote the importance of memory training for young children.
How do you measure the success of The Umonics Method in terms of improving children’s memory skills?
At The Umonics Method, we have a comprehensive evaluation system that helps us measure the success of our memory enrichment training program for preschoolers. We use a variety of tools and techniques to assess the progress of our students, including standardized memory tests, observation, and feedback from parents and teachers. Our assessment system is designed to ensure that our students are making progress in their memory skills and to identify areas where they may need additional support.
One of the key indicators of success at The Umonics Method is our students’ ability to apply the memory techniques they have learned to real-life situations. We encourage our students to use their memory skills in their everyday lives, such as remembering their daily routine, recalling important information, and retaining new concepts. We also track our students’ progress through regular assessments and feedback sessions with parents and teachers. This helps us to identify areas where our students may need additional support or where we can improve our program.
Another way we measure the success of The Umonics Method is through the feedback we receive from parents and teachers. We value the opinions of our stakeholders, and we regularly ask for their feedback to ensure that our program is meeting their needs and expectations. We also conduct surveys and focus groups to gather feedback from parents and teachers, which helps us to identify areas where we can improve our program and make it more effective.
Overall, we believe that the success of The Umonics Method is reflected in the success of our students. We are proud of the progress our students have made in their memory skills and the positive impact our program has had on their lives. We will continue to evaluate our program and make improvements as needed to ensure that we are providing the best possible memory enrichment training for preschoolers in Singapore.
“At The Umonics Method, our success is measured not only by our students’ improved memory skills but also by their ability to apply these skills in their daily lives and the positive feedback we receive from parents and teachers.”

How do you balance your work as a memory trainer and CEO with your personal life and other interests?
As a memory trainer, CEO, and entrepreneur, I have a lot on my plate, but I have learned to prioritize and manage my time effectively. My family is very important to me, and I make sure to spend quality time with them as often as possible. I also have a few hobbies and interests that I enjoy, such as reading, traveling, and playing sports.
To balance my work and personal life, I try to stick to a schedule and set specific times for work and relaxation. I also make sure to delegate tasks to my team members and trust them to handle things on their own. This allows me to focus on the most important aspects of my work while also taking care of myself and my loved ones.
Furthermore, I believe that maintaining good physical and mental health is crucial for achieving a healthy work-life balance. Therefore, I make sure to exercise regularly, eat healthy foods, and get enough sleep each night. I also practice mindfulness and meditation to help reduce stress and increase my focus.
Ultimately, finding balance in life is an ongoing process, and I strive to continually evaluate my priorities and make adjustments as needed. By prioritizing my personal life as well as my work, I am able to live a fulfilling and meaningful life.
What advice would you give to parents who are interested in helping their children develop stronger memory skills?
As a memory trainer and founder of The Umonics Method, my advice to parents who want to help their children develop stronger memory skills is to make it a fun and engaging activity. Children have a natural curiosity and love to learn new things, so incorporating memory techniques into everyday activities can help them retain information in a more effective and efficient way.
One of the easiest ways to improve memory skills is through repetition and practice. Encourage your children to repeat the information they want to remember out loud, draw pictures or create mnemonics to help them remember. You can also make use of everyday objects and events to help them remember things more easily. For example, you can use landmarks or visual cues to help them remember directions or associate items with colors or shapes.
It’s also important to create a positive learning environment where children feel supported and encouraged. Avoid putting too much pressure on your child to perform or memorize things perfectly, and instead focus on celebrating their progress and achievements. Praise their efforts and provide constructive feedback to help them improve.
Another crucial factor is to ensure that children get enough rest, sleep, and exercise. These factors are crucial for optimal brain function and memory retention. Make sure your child is getting enough sleep, exercise, and a healthy diet to support their brain and memory development.
Finally, as a parent, you can also lead by example. Show your children how you use memory techniques to remember important information and how you apply these skills in your daily life. This can help to inspire and motivate them to learn and improve their own memory skills.
What role do you think memory training can play in improving academic performance and success in later life?
As a memory athlete and CEO of The Umonics Method, I believe that memory training can play a crucial role in improving academic performance and success in later life. Memory skills are essential for learning and retaining new information, which is a crucial part of academic success. By improving their memory skills, students can retain and recall information more easily and quickly, allowing them to better comprehend complex subjects and perform better on exams.
In addition, memory training can help develop critical thinking skills, as well as enhance creativity and problem-solving abilities. These skills are important not only for academic success, but also for success in many aspects of life, including career advancement and personal development.
Furthermore, memory training can also improve focus and concentration, as well as reduce stress and anxiety. When students are able to recall information easily, they feel more confident and are less likely to experience anxiety or stress associated with academic performance.
Overall, I believe that memory training can have a significant impact on academic success and personal development. By teaching children memory techniques and helping them develop their memory skills, we can set them up for a lifetime of success in all areas of their lives.
